After a successful and ongoing fundraising effort by Ashwaubenon Public Safety, the K-9 Unit was established in 2014. A selection process began andOfficer R. Young was selected as the handler. A 2 year old German Shepard named Ole was purchased from K-9 Services in Albuquerque, NM. Officer Young and Ole traveled to New Mexico for 7 weeks where extensive training ensued. Officer Young and Ole were trained and tested on many different areas including: obedience, agility, tracking, wind scenting, area searches, building searches, evidence recovery, tactical operations, handler protection and narcotic detection. Officer Young and Ole established a very close bond with each other during their time in New Mexico due to the aggressive training and amount of time spent together.
Upon returning from New Mexico, Officer Young and Ole began patrol duties for the Village of Ashwaubenon in November 2014. Ole immediately began making an impact on police services provided to Ashwaubenon. Ole began assisting in locating concealed narcotics inside of vehicles that likely would not have been found without the use of a trained K-9. Officer Young and Ole have been utilized by various surrounding agencies for narcotic detection, officer safety, as well as locating an elderly male that walked away from a residential facility during the winter months. During their patrol duties in the first few months of operation, Officer Young and Ole have assisted in the seizure of numerous narcotics, cash, several vehicles, as well as illegally concealed weapons.
